The spatula is the workhorse of kitchen tools. It is the unsung hero of every cook. It deserves some respect.
The term spatula is used to refer to various small implements with a broad, flat, flexible blade used to mix, spread and lift materials including foods, drugs, plaster and paints. The kitchen spatula, also called a rubber scraper is a utensil with a long handle and a broad flat edge, used for mixing and scraping bowls. Kitchen spatulas are usually made of plastic, with a wooden or plastic handle to insulate them from heat. It is not to be confused with a turner (pet peeve of mine) which is not meant to “scrape” batters, etc. but to “turn” cookies, meat, fish, etc. Flipper and turner are interchangeable. Spatula and scraper are interchangeable. Turner and spatula are not interchangeable. Semantics are a “thing” for me.
All that being said there has been little improvement in design of spatulas over the years...until now. Now we have the SWITCHIT. The first improvement is that both ends are tapered and angled thus useable for scraping the bowl. Secondly, it is seamless thus
preventing ingredients from creeping into cracks and crusting there for generations. The silicone of which it is made is heat resistant to 450 degrees, thus preventing those curling edges that render the tool useless at effectively scraping anything much less a thin crepe batter. The Switchit also comes in a rainbow of colors which is vast improvement on the standard white with a wooden handle our mom’s have/had. Color is no small matter. It’s so much easier to spot a particular color in that crazy kitchen drawer than having them all silver or white. The humble spatula has come a long way, baby.
